MORE HORSEPOWER FROM YOUR 302

THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO COAX MORE HORSEPOWER FROM YOUR 302 AND ITS NOT AS DIFFICULT AS IT MAY SEEM, NOR AS EXPENSIVE AS YOU MAY THINK. 1971-& 1972 FACTORY 302’s HORSEPOWER OUTPUT WAS IN THE 200 HP RANGE, 1973 AND LATER WERE DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY AND WERE RATED AT 160 HORSEPOWER DUE TO. EMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS IMPOSED BY THE EPA IN THOSE YEARS. BUT YOU CAN STILL PULL MORE POWER OUT OF THE ENGINES BY SIMPLE ADD ONS AND STEPS WHICH WE WILL LIST BELOW. READ ON!

Mavericks & Comets which came with a 302 V8 from the factory can be “pumped up” in several ways to increase performance and add to your driving enjoyment. One of the most common is the installation of a 4 BBL carburetor , and aluminum manifold which should yield about 20-to 25 HP. Then a set of “Hooker” headers which can be obtained from any good auto parts store can give you another 20-to 30 HP . Then… install a “Siamese” exhaust (Not a cross over pipe) in the area just past the collectors and you” ll find an additional 15 to 30 HP . Even in a Worst Case Scenario you should pick up an extra 55 Horsepower on the light side , and at the high side 85 Horsepower.

All this without going inside your engine . If you wish to add more ,then a Cam , roller lifters, new lightweight Aluminum Heads can easily yield another 100 plus horsepower.

If you’re just going for a really streetable car ..then I would suggest you leave the stock cam alone until you’re ready for a “valve job” which is inevitable since you will probably be due soon if you’re burning unleaded gas since the 302’s in these years did not have provisions for unleaded gas and in time the valves will be burned due to inadequate lubrication from the fuel itself.
When its time for a valve job ..THEN ...I would suggest a set of aluminum heads to really “Wake Up” your 302 .We have used Trick Flow AND Edlebrock and both work great. What a difference .!!
